Tomatoes are one of the easiest fruit/vegetable to grow, a good plant for beginners. Also, who doesn’t like picking their homegrown, organic tomatoes, on a hot, summer day? Not only will you get the satisfaction of looking after your little plants, you only need a few to reward you with a lot of tomatoes of your choice.

Varieties Of Tomatoes

We can probably think of about 5-20 different tomato varieties off the top of our heads. There are more than 3,000 varieties of heirloom or heritage tomatoes in active cultivation worldwide, and more than 15,000 known varieties. But they all fall into 2 main categories, bush tomatoes, and cordon tomatoes.

Bush tomatoes(determinate)- Those grown as a bush or hanging basket types do not need support. You won’t need to remove side shoots, and bush tomatoes are easier to grow.

Cordon tomatoes(indeterminate)-Single stem, do not bush and grow upright. They will need support, and up growing up to 1.8m(6ft).

Recommended variteties:

Super Sweet 100‘-Cordon, produce sweet cherry tomato, with thin skin, ideal for salads, and high-yields.

ILDI‘- Cordon, produce sweet, yellow, pear-shaped tomatoes. Perfect for eating raw and in salads, ideal to grow in a container/pot.

Rio Grande‘- Bush, produces deep-red, plum tomatoes, heavy crops, and perfect for sauces.

Incas‘-Bush, produces bright-red, plum tomato, with thick flesh, perfects for barbeques, and purees.

How To Grow Tomatoes

Tomatoes are easy to grow from seed. You can plant your seed from late March-early April if you’re growing it outdoors. If your planning on growing in a green house plant from late February-mid March.
