How To Grow Cabbages

Cabbages need a sunny site, and organic, well-drained soil. Wherever possible, prepare the soil by adding well-rotted manure or garden compost to the planting beds before planting. Cabbage grows best in neutral/slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.5/6.8. If you in an area where there is heavy rain or the soil is sandy, you can add a nitrogen-rich blood meal or cottonseed meal to enhance leafy growth.

Start by planting the seeds indoors,1-2cm deep 1 inch apart 4-6 weeks before the last frost in spring. Place cabbage outside in the garden when they are 3-4 inches tall, bury 1-2 inches deep, 18-24 inches apart. Sow directly into the soil outside. In a mild-winter region, you can sow seed in late summer for a winter or spring harvest. Cabbage grows best between 7-24°C, although cabbage shortly tolerates temperatures as low as -6.5°C. Cabbage comes to harvest in 80-180 days from seed depending on the variety. Keep soil moist, and water regularly.
