Beetroot is a root vegetable, with dark purple skin, and purple/pink flesh. Freshly picked beetroot are tender, and have a delicious earthy taste. They are prepared in many salads, and other tasty dishes, most of all beetroot are easy to grow from seed.

Varieties Of Beetroot

There are many varieties of beetroots, different colours e.g. red, purple, pink, golden, white, and even pink candy-striped, different sizes, etc. Here are some recommended beetroot varieties:

Detroit Dark Red‘- Produces very good-sized beets on average. It has very dark red flesh, and the greens are great for eating too. Grow in 60 days.

Chioggia‘- Produces sweet, more tender than normal, candy-striped beets, grow in around 50 days. Also known as ‘Bassano‘, ‘Bull’s Eye‘, and ‘Candy Stripe‘.

Touchstone Gold‘- Produces sweet, tender, golden beets with yellow/white rings visible. Higher germination rate, and grow in 55 days.

Blankoma‘- Produces sweet, white beets, with tall, strong, and green tops, grow in 55 days. Perfect for salads.

How To Grow Beetroot

Beetroot prefers to be grown in moist, fertile soil in a sunny spot, but will also thrive in raised beds or pots. Before sowing make sure your soil is properly preparedremove all weeds, big lumps, and stones. If you want to improve your soil, add some well-rotted garden compost, or a 10-10-10 fertilizer.

Sow directly into the soil from mid-April to July, although you can sow earlier under clothes or fleece in late February to early March, using bolt-resistant varieties. Make a little hole around 2cm in the soil, and drop a seed every 10cm. Cover, and water often, make sure the soil is moist. Beet seeds germinate at temperatures from 10-30°C, and may take two to three weeks longer if in colder soil. Beetroot can be grown in pots/containers with at least a diameter, and depth of 20cm(8 inches).

Depending on the variety, beetroots can be picked when the beet is the size of a tennis ball, it usually takes about 80-90 days after sowing. If ready to harvest, gently hold the top and lift while under the beet with a fork.
