How To Grow Strawberries And Their Benefits | My Peaceful Land

Everybody loves big, sweet, and succulent strawberries. Strawberries are incredibly easy to grow, and can be grown almost anywhere – in borders, containers or hanging baskets. Put in little work and get rewarded with delicious, summer strawberries, and save money by not buying these expensive supermarket strawberries that won’t be as organic, or tasty.

Types Of Strawberries

Strawberries are extremely popular. there are approximately 103 distinct species and subspecies of strawberry plants. These are my top 3 favourite:

Mignonette– produce lots of very small and sweet strawberries from July through to September.

Sweetheart– produce a large amount of larger strawberries in early and mid-summer.

Flamenco– produce strawberries in large amounts from June right through to September.

When And Where To Plant Strawberries

Plant your strawberries during spring(March, April, May) or Autumn(September, October, November). Strawberries favour a sunny position in fertile, free-draining soil. Improve your soil with organic matter like compost, quickly achieved by putting off foods, fruits, newspapers, vegetable peels, etc in a wormery, the worms will eat everything and turn it into a rich in nutrition, homemade compost. You will be able to harvest from early summer(June) to early Autumn (September). If You are worried about sunlight, and can’t find much sunlight, id advise buying Alpine strawberries because they prefer slightly shadier locations.

How To Plant Strawberries

Water frequently while new plants are establishing. Also water during dry periods in the growing season. Try to avoid wetting crowns and fruit as this can promote disease.

Fertilizers are optional, if you decide to use fertilizer, use bonemeal, it’s a slow-release phosphorus fertilizer ideal for strawberries, mix a little bone meal with some soil. Place a small layer of the soil and bone meal mixture in the bottom/top of each plant.

The main thing to do is water, and give it sunlight. If you do these two important things constantly you can expect strawberries for four successful years before replacing them. Occasionally rotating the plants into new soil to minimize the risk of disease of building in soil, or to give the strawberry plant more space to thrive.

Nutrients And Health Benefits Of Stwaberries

Strawberries are rich in nutrients, they contain Vitamins C (help support the immune system and skin health), B-9 (tissue growth and cell function), small amounts of B-6 (helps central nervous system), K (blood clotting, bone metabolism, and regulating blood calcium level), and E(helps support the immune system, cell function, and skin health).

strawberries contain minerals- manganese, potassium, iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorus, plant compounds- pelargonidin, ellagic acid, ellagitannins, and procyanidins

They may also improve blood antioxidant status, decrease oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, improve vascular function, improve your blood lipid profile, reduce harmful oxidation of LDL(bad) cholesterol, good for blood sugar regulation, and cancer prevention.

How To Add Strawberries To Your Diet

Strawberries can be easily added to your diet, you can eat them raw, make jam, milkshakes, desserts, tea, whipped strawberry butter, strawberry slushy, wine, foods, and the best thing is that they can be grown in your household.
